Zinc is an essential trace mineral that your body needs for numerous vital functions. It’s not something your body can produce on its own, so you must obtain it through your diet or supplements.

    How Zinc Helps Fight Colds

While not a guaranteed cure or preventive measure, research suggests that zinc can be beneficial in fighting the common cold, primarily by:

    1. Inhibiting Viral Replication: Zinc ions appear to interfere with the ability of cold viruses (like rhinoviruses) to replicate within your nasal passages and throat. By slowing down viral multiplication, zinc may reduce the overall viral load in your body.
    2. Suppressing Nasal Inflammation: Zinc may help reduce the inflammation in the nasal passages that contributes to cold symptoms like congestion and runny nose.
    3. Boosting Immune Response: Zinc is crucial for the proper functioning of various immune cells, including T-cells and other white blood cells that identify and destroy pathogens. Adequate zinc levels allow your immune system to mount a more effective and rapid response to infection.

Key points regarding zinc and colds:

    • Timing is crucial: Studies suggest that zinc is most effective when taken within 24 hours of the first cold symptoms appearing (e.g., as lozenges or syrup).
    • Reduced Duration: When taken early, zinc may help shorten the duration of a cold by an average of about two days and potentially reduce the severity of symptoms.
    • Form Matters: Zinc lozenges are commonly used because they allow the zinc to come into direct contact with the throat and nasal passages, where the cold virus often takes hold.
    • Avoid Intranasal Zinc: Do NOT use zinc-containing nasal sprays. These have been linked to a permanent or long-lasting loss of the sense of smell.
    • Dosage: The recommended daily allowance (RDA) for zinc is relatively low (e.g., 8 mg for adult women, 11 mg for adult men). However, doses used in cold studies are typically much higher (e.g., 75-100 mg daily, divided into multiple doses). Always follow product instructions or consult a healthcare professional.
    • Side Effects: Oral zinc supplements can cause side effects such as nausea, upset stomach, or a bad taste in the mouth.

    Why Your Body Needs Zinc

Beyond its potential role in fighting colds, zinc is indispensable for a wide array of bodily functions:

    1. Immune System Function: Zinc is critical for the development and function of immune cells. It helps regulate immune responses, ensuring your body can effectively fight off bacteria, viruses, and other pathogens. A deficiency in zinc can lead to a compromised immune system and increased susceptibility to infections.
    2. Cell Growth and Division: Zinc is essential for DNA and protein synthesis, making it vital for cell growth, division, and repair throughout your body. This is especially important during periods of rapid growth, such as pregnancy, infancy, childhood, and adolescence.
    3. Wound Healing: It plays a significant role in every stage of wound healing, from blood clotting to tissue repair, and helps prevent infections in wounds.
    4. Metabolism: Zinc is a component of hundreds of enzymes involved in various metabolic processes, including carbohydrate breakdown, protein synthesis, and fat metabolism.
    5. Sense of Taste and Smell: Zinc is crucial for the proper functioning of your senses of taste and smell. Zinc deficiency can lead to a diminished or altered sense of these senses.
    6. Hormone Production and Balance: It’s involved in the production and regulation of various hormones, including testosterone and thyroid hormones.
    7. Antioxidant Properties: Zinc acts as an antioxidant, helping to protect cells from damage caused by free radicals, which are unstable molecules that can contribute to aging and chronic diseases.

    Sources of Zinc:

You can get zinc from a variety of foods. Rich sources include:

    • Oysters (exceptionally high)
    • Red meat (beef, lamb)
    • Poultry (chicken, turkey)
    • Seafood (crab, lobster)
    • Legumes (beans, lentils, chickpeas)
    • Nuts and seeds (cashews, almonds, pumpkin seeds)
    • Dairy products (milk, cheese, yogurt)
    • Whole grains
    • Fortified breakfast cereals

While zinc deficiency is uncommon in developed countries for those with a varied diet, certain groups may be at higher risk, including vegetarians/vegans (as zinc from plant sources is less bioavailable), individuals with certain digestive disorders (like Crohn’s disease), pregnant or breastfeeding women, and those with chronic alcohol abuse.

Always consult a healthcare professional before starting any new supplements, especially if you have underlying health conditions or are taking other medications.

Nasal discharge, commonly known as snot or boogers, is more than just an annoyance; it’s a vital part of your body’s defense system. Its color, consistency, and quantity can offer clues about your health, and it plays a crucial role in fighting off disease.

What Your Nasal Discharge Says About Your Health

The appearance of your nasal discharge can give you hints about what’s going on in your body:

    • Clear Mucus: This is typically normal and healthy. It’s mostly water, proteins, antibodies, and dissolved salts, and it’s produced constantly to keep your nasal passages moist and trap inhaled particles. If you have an excessive amount of clear, runny mucus, it could indicate allergies (allergic rhinitis) or the early stages of a viral infection like a cold.
    • White or Cloudy Mucus: This often suggests congestion or an impending cold. When nasal passages become swollen or inflamed, mucus can lose moisture, becoming thicker and opaque. Your body might also be producing extra white blood cells to combat a nascent infection.
    • Yellow Mucus: A yellowish tinge usually means your body is actively fighting an infection. The color comes from white blood cells (immune cells) that rush to the site of infection and are then expelled with the mucus after doing their job. It can indicate a progressing cold, viral infection, or even a bacterial infection like sinusitis.
    • Green Mucus: This often signifies a more advanced or intense infection, whether viral or bacterial. The green color is due to a higher concentration of dead white blood cells and other waste products from the immune response. If accompanied by other symptoms like fever, facial pain, or if it persists for more than 10-12 days, it’s a good idea to consult a doctor, as it could be a bacterial sinus infection requiring antibiotics.
    • Pink or Red Mucus: This indicates the presence of blood. It can be due to dry nasal passages, irritation from forceful nose blowing, a minor nosebleed, or even an infection causing fragile blood vessels. While often not serious, persistent or significant bleeding warrants medical attention.
    • Brown Mucus: Brown discharge can be old, dried blood, or it might be due to inhaling substances like dirt, dust, snuff, or even pollution. Smokers may also experience brown mucus due to inhaled debris.
    • Black or Gray Mucus: This is less common. It can be caused by inhaling large amounts of pollutants, smoke (especially for heavy smokers), or certain drugs. In rare cases, especially in immunocompromised individuals, black mucus can be a sign of a serious fungal infection, which requires immediate medical attention.

Important Note: While mucus color can be an indicator, it’s not a definitive diagnostic tool. The duration of symptoms, other accompanying symptoms (fever, pain, fatigue), and your overall feeling are more reliable indicators of the severity and type of illness. If you have concerning symptoms or if your nasal discharge changes significantly and persists, it’s always best to consult a healthcare professional.

How Nasal Discharge Helps Fight Disease

Nasal mucus, along with the tiny hair-like structures called cilia lining your nasal passages, forms a crucial part of your innate immune system:

    1. Trapping and Filtering: Mucus acts as a sticky trap, capturing inhaled dust, pollen, allergens, bacteria, viruses, and other foreign particles. This prevents them from reaching your lungs and causing more severe respiratory infections.
    2. Moisturizing and Lubricating: It keeps the delicate lining of your nasal passages moist, preventing them from drying out and becoming irritated or cracked, which could create entry points for pathogens.
    3. Physical Removal (Mucociliary Clearance): The cilia constantly sweep the mucus (with its trapped particles) towards the back of your throat, where it’s typically swallowed and then destroyed by stomach acid. This continuous “conveyor belt” effectively removes harmful substances from your respiratory system.
    4. Antimicrobial Properties: Nasal mucus contains a variety of immune components that directly fight pathogens:
      • Antibodies (Immunoglobulins), especially Secretory IgA: These proteins bind to bacteria and viruses, neutralizing them and preventing them from attaching to and infecting cells.
      • Enzymes: Such as lysozyme, which can break down the cell walls of bacteria.
      • Antimicrobial Peptides: These molecules can directly kill or inhibit the growth of microbes.
      • White Blood Cells: When an infection is present, the body sends an army of white blood cells (like neutrophils) to the area. These cells engulf and destroy pathogens, and their presence and breakdown contribute to the color changes in mucus.
    5. Inflammatory Response: When irritants or pathogens are detected, the nasal lining can become inflamed, leading to increased mucus production. This increased flow helps to flush out the invaders more rapidly.

In essence, nasal discharge is your body’s sophisticated, self-cleaning, and immune-active barrier against the constant onslaught of airborne threats.

The UK has launched a new e-visa facility for Pakistanis, replacing the physical sticker visa in passports for most applicants. This change came into effect on July 15, 2025.

The Pakistanis who will benefit from this new facility are primarily main applicants for study or work-related visas that involve a stay of longer than six months.

Specifically, the e-visa is being rolled out for main applicants in the following categories:

    • Students, including short-term study for 11 months.
    • Global Business Mobility routes (specifically, Senior or Specialist Worker, Graduate Trainee, UK Expansion Worker, Service Supplier, Secondment Worker).
    • Global Talent.
    • International Sportsperson.
    • Skilled Worker (including Health and Care).
    • Temporary Work routes (specifically, Charity Worker, Creative Worker, Government Authorised Exchange, International Agreement, and Religious work routes).
    • Youth Mobility Scheme.

This means that these individuals will no longer receive a physical visa sticker in their passports. Instead, their immigration status will be a digital record, accessible through an online UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) account. This change aims to make the visa process simpler, more secure, and allows applicants to retain their passports during the application process.

Who will still need a physical sticker visa?

    • Dependants applying under any visa route.
    • Main applicants for visas other than study or work, such as general visitor visas.

It’s also important to note that anyone with existing, in-date physical visa stickers does not need to take any action; their current visa remains valid. The UK government plans to eventually roll out e-visas to all visa routes in the future.

The European Union is currently delaying the imposition of retaliatory tariffs on the US, despite recent announcements of new 30% tariffs by the US. Here’s why:
    * Preference for Negotiation: The primary reason is that the EU explicitly prefers a negotiated solution to trade disputes. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has stated that “this is now the time for negotiations” and that they “have always been clear that we prefer a negotiated solution.” They see the period until August 1 (the US’s proposed implementation date for the new tariffs) as a window for reaching a deal.
    * Avoiding Escalation and Economic Harm: Imposing retaliatory tariffs would likely lead to a further escalation of trade tensions, which could significantly harm both the EU and US economies. Tariffs raise prices for consumers, disrupt supply chains, and create uncertainty for businesses, potentially leading to job losses. The EU is already concerned about slowing economic growth and doesn’t want to compound those challenges.
    * Strategic Patience: Some analysts suggest that the EU is exercising strategic patience, aiming to avoid playing directly into the US’s hand by immediately retaliating. They may believe that a more measured approach could ultimately be more effective in securing a favorable outcome.
    * Impact on the Global Economy: The EU and US have the largest trade relationship in the world. Any major disruption through tariffs could have significant negative ramifications for the global economy. The EU is likely considering these broader implications.
    * Hoping for a Shift in US Domestic Politics: While not explicitly stated, some might hope that domestic pressures within the US (from businesses and consumers affected by the tariffs) could lead to a change in the US administration’s stance.
While the EU is currently delaying, they have also clearly stated that they are preparing “robust and proportionate countermeasures” if a negotiated solution cannot be reached by the August 1 deadline. This indicates that retaliation is still on the table as a last resort to protect EU interests if negotiations fail.

Consumers in Muslim countries, including Pakistan, have called for a boycott of the fashion brand Zara primarily due to two main reasons, both tied to the ongoing Israel-Palestine conflict:

    1. Controversial Advertising Campaign (December 2023):
      • The “The Jacket” Campaign: In December 2023, Zara launched an advertising campaign titled “The Jacket” which featured mannequins with missing limbs and statues wrapped in white shrouds amidst what appeared to be rubble and destroyed environments.
      • Public Outcry: Many social media users and activists quickly drew parallels between these images and the devastating scenes emerging from Gaza, where thousands of Palestinians, including women and children, have been killed, and bodies are often wrapped in white cloths for burial according to Islamic tradition.
      • Accusations of Insensitivity: The campaign was widely criticized as “tone-deaf,” insensitive, and even mocking the suffering and death in Gaza. Hashtags like #BoycottZara trended globally, including in Muslim-majority countries.
      • Zara’s Response: Zara’s parent company, Inditex, removed the controversial images from its website and social media. They stated that the campaign was conceived in July and photographed in September (before the escalation of the conflict in October 2023) and was intended to showcase craft-made garments in an artistic context resembling a sculptor’s studio. They expressed regret for the “misunderstanding” and the offense caused. However, for many, the damage was already done.
    2. Previous Anti-Palestinian Comments by a Zara Executive (2021):
      • Vanessa Perilman’s Remarks: In 2021, screenshots circulated online showing an exchange between Zara’s head designer for the women’s department, Vanessa Perilman, and Palestinian model Qaher Harhash. In these messages, Perilman made inflammatory and anti-Palestinian comments, suggesting, among other things, that Palestinians were uneducated and that Israelis did not teach children to hate.
      • Renewed Outrage: While Zara’s parent company, Inditex, at the time distanced itself from Perilman’s remarks, stating they do not tolerate disrespect for any culture or religion, these comments resurfaced during the December 2023 controversy, further fueling calls for a boycott. Many consumers felt that the brand had a history of insensitivity towards Palestinians.

These incidents, particularly the perceived insensitivity of the advertising campaign amidst a humanitarian crisis in Gaza, led to widespread anger and calls for boycotts from consumers, activists, and pro-Palestinian groups in Muslim countries like Pakistan and beyond. The boycotts are a form of consumer activism aimed at pressuring brands to be more socially responsible and to align with humanitarian values.

The recent news of Jane Birkin’s original “Birkin” handbag selling at auction for €8.6 million (approximately $10.1 million USD) has indeed made headlines in the fashion world, making it the most expensive handbag ever sold at auction. The question is, what makes this specific bag so special?

Its uniqueness stems from a combination of several factors:

    1. Historical Significance and “Originality”:
      • The Genesis Story: The Birkin bag’s origin is a legendary tale in fashion history. In 1983, on a flight from Paris to London, the renowned Anglo-French singer and actress Jane Birkin happened to be seated next to Jean-Louis Dumas, the then-CEO of Hermès. Birkin complained about not being able to find a suitable large bag for all her belongings, especially as a young mother. Inspired by her dilemma, Dumas sketched a design for a spacious, practical bag on an airplane sickness bag right there and then.
      • The Prototype: This particular bag is the very first prototype created for Jane Birkin in 1984, delivered to her in 1985. Its status as the “original” and “first-ever” makes it incredibly rare and a foundational piece in the history of one of the world’s most iconic luxury items.
      • Jane Birkin’s Personal Use: The bag was used by Jane Birkin herself for many years, bearing visible signs of wear and tear, including her initials “J.B.” stamped on the front flap. This direct provenance and the personal connection to its namesake add immense historical and emotional value. She even adorned it with stickers supporting humanitarian causes, further personalizing it.
    2. Unique and Distinctive Features:
      • One-of-a-Kind Design Elements: This original Birkin prototype has several features that were not replicated in the commercially produced Birkin bags that followed:
        • Fixed Shoulder Strap: It includes a non-removable shoulder strap, a practical feature Jane Birkin needed, which is absent from standard Birkin bags (though a limited edition with a detachable strap was released in the 1990s).
        • Unique Size: Its size is a unique hybrid, measuring between the common Birkin 35 and Birkin 40 sizes, giving it a distinctive silhouette.
        • Gilded Brass Hardware: It features gilded brass hardware, whereas later commercial versions typically used gold-plated or palladium hardware.
        • Smaller Bottom Studs: The “feet” or bottom studs on this prototype are noticeably smaller than those found on subsequent production models.
        • Éclair Zipper: The internal zipper was sourced from the Éclair company, unlike later Birkins which use Riri zippers.
        • Closed Metal Rings: The metal rings (pontets) on the original are closed, similar to the Hermès Haut à Courroies (HAC) model, differing from the open rings on later Birkins.
        • Secret Nail Clippers: A charming and highly unusual detail, the bag contained a hidden nail clipper attached to a chain inside, as Jane Birkin “was never one for long painted nails.”
    3. Hermès Craftsmanship and Quality:
      • Finest Materials: Birkin bags are crafted from the world’s most exquisite leathers and other premium materials, meticulously sourced.
      • Handmade Perfection: Each Birkin bag is a masterpiece of haute craftsmanship. A single highly trained artisan hand-stitches and constructs an entire bag from start to finish, a process that can take anywhere from 18 to 40 hours. This dedication to detail and quality ensures exceptional durability and artistry.
      • Exclusivity and Limited Production: Hermès deliberately maintains strict control over the production numbers of Birkin bags, ensuring their rarity and exclusivity. This scarcity contributes significantly to their desirability and high resale value. Waiting lists for new Birkins can span years.
    4. Investment Value:
      • Hermès Birkin bags are not just fashion accessories but are also considered a strong investment, often appreciating in value over time, sometimes outperforming traditional investments like gold or the S&P 500. This is especially true for rare, historical, or unique pieces like the original prototype.

In essence, the $10 million “Birkin” handbag is far more than just a bag; it’s a pivotal piece of fashion history, a cultural icon, and an unparalleled work of artisanal craftsmanship. Its originality, direct connection to Jane Birkin, and its unique, prototype-specific features make it an extraordinary and priceless artifact for fashion collectors and enthusiasts worldwide.

The forced expulsion of Palestinians from Gaza is a matter of grave international concern and is widely condemned under international law. While there are discussions and proposals from some Israeli officials that suggest a desire for “voluntary relocation” or the creation of “humanitarian cities” that critics fear could lead to de facto expulsion, the overwhelming stance of the international community, including the United Nations, is firmly against any such action.

Here’s a breakdown of the situation:

    Current Situation and Concerns:

    • Israeli Proposals: Some Israeli officials, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz, have publicly discussed concepts like “voluntary relocation” or establishing “humanitarian cities” on the ruins of Rafah, from where Palestinians could “emigrate” to other countries. These proposals are met with significant alarm by Palestinians and human rights organizations.
    • De Facto Displacement: Regardless of official statements, a massive internal displacement has already occurred within Gaza due to the ongoing conflict. Over 90% of Gaza’s 2.3 million Palestinians have been forcibly displaced at least once, often multiple times, within the Strip. Large areas have been rendered uninhabitable due to destruction, and access to basic necessities like food, water, and medical supplies is severely limited.
    • “Concentration Zones”: There are reports and concerns that Israeli plans for designated “humanitarian zones” or “concentration zones” in Gaza, particularly near the Egyptian border, could effectively become massive, overcrowded camps with dire living conditions, designed to further pressure Palestinians to leave. UNRWA has warned that these could create “massive concentration camps.”
    • Statements by Rights Groups: Human rights organizations like the International Commission of Jurists (ICJ), the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC), and Euro-Med Monitor have repeatedly stated that Israel’s actions, including extensive destruction, siege, and the creation of unbearable living conditions, amount to forcible displacement, which is a war crime and potentially a crime against humanity under international law. They argue that any departure under these circumstances cannot be considered truly “voluntary.”
    • “Ethnic Cleansing” Concerns: Many Palestinian sources, human rights groups, and some international observers view the ongoing actions and proposals as laying the groundwork for “ethnic cleansing” or the permanent removal of Palestinians from their homeland.

    International Law and UN Stance:

    • Prohibition of Forced Transfer: International humanitarian law, particularly Article 49 of the Fourth Geneva Convention, strictly prohibits individual or mass forcible transfers, as well as deportations of protected persons from occupied territory, regardless of motive. This prohibition applies to transfers both within and outside the occupied territory.
    • War Crime/Crime Against Humanity: The Statute of the International Criminal Court (ICC) lists the “deportation or transfer [by the Occupying Power] of all or parts of the population of the occupied territory within or outside this territory” as a war crime. Forced transfer can also constitute a crime against humanity.
    • UN Position: The United Nations and its agencies (like UNRWA and OCHA) have consistently and “firmly” opposed any forced displacement of Palestinians from Gaza. They emphasize that any consent to leave must be truly voluntary and not induced by force, threat, or the creation of an uninhabitable environment. UN officials have warned against a “second Nakba,” referencing the 1948 displacement of Palestinians.
    • Right of Return: Under international law, displaced persons retain their inalienable right to return to their homes.

    In conclusion:

While there is a clear stated intent from some Israeli officials to encourage Palestinians to leave Gaza, and actions on the ground have already led to massive internal displacement and conditions that could compel people to leave, international law explicitly prohibits the forced expulsion of a population from occupied territory. The international community, led by the UN, strongly condemns any such move and regards it as a grave violation of international law. Whether or not a mass expulsion ultimately occurs depends on a complex interplay of international pressure, diplomatic efforts, and the actions of the parties on the ground. However, the legal and moral frameworks are unequivocally against it.
