It appears there's a misunderstanding in the premise of your question. Brian Lara's Test innings was not declared on 367 by a South African captain. It appears there’s a misunderstanding in the premise of your question. Brian Lara’s Test innings was not declared on 367 by a South African captain.
Instead, on July 7, 2025, Wiaan Mulder, the stand-in captain for South Africa, declared his own innings on 367 not out during a Test match against Zimbabwe. He did this while being 33 runs short of Brian Lara’s all-time Test record of 400 not out.
Mulder explained his decision by stating:
      * He felt the team had scored enough runs and needed time to bowl out Zimbabwe.
      * He believed Brian Lara, as a legend of the game, deserved to keep his record of 400 not out. He also mentioned that the head coach, Shukri Conrad, agreed with this sentiment.
Brian Lara’s highest Test scores are 400 not out (against England in 2004) and 375 (against England in 1994). He was not declared on 367.
