You’re not mistaken — on August 6, 2025, President Donald Trump signed an executive order imposing an additional 25% tariff on imports from India, citing India’s purchase of Russian oil as a key issue. That increases the total U.S. tariff on Indian goods to 50%. These increased duties will come into effect 21 days later (AP News).

    ⚠️ Details & Timeline

    • The initial 25% tariff was announced on July 30, set to begin August 1; it targeted Indian goods in response to trade barriers and India’s purchases of energy and arms from Russia (Politico).
    • The additional 25% “penalty” tariff, raising the total to 50%, was formally enacted on August 6. It specifically targets India’s Russian oil imports and will become effective 21 days later, giving India a brief window to negotiate (AP News).

As of today, August 6, the combined tariff stands at 50%, though the full economic impacts will unfold after the effective date.

    🔎 Economic & Market Impact

    Impact on India

    • Sectors likely hardest hit include textiles, garments, jewelry, auto parts, electronics, and marine products — many of which depend heavily on U.S. exports (reuters.com).
    • Exporters in Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Morbi (especially ceramics) are warning of reduced competitiveness, lost margins, and heightened planning uncertainty (reuters.com).
    • Analysts expect export growth of Indian goods to decline, with potential GDP effects. Fitch has already trimmed India’s FY26 growth estimate to around 6.3% (www.ndtv.com, The Economic Times).

Impact on U.S. Consumers and Businesses

    • Higher prices expected on products like Android smartphones, clothing, auto parts, and jewelry—U.S. consumers may face sticker shocks on even basic goods (Indiatimes).
    • Although some exports (e.g. pharmaceuticals and electronics) were exempted initially, the broader tariffs could still ripple across the U.S. supply chain (www.ndtv.com).
    • Corporate positioning impacted: ETFs tracking Indian equities, such as INDA, have dropped significantly amid investor concerns. India’s equities have slipped ~6% over the past month, contrasting sharply with gains in China’s ETFs (marketwatch.com).

    Strategic Responses

    • Despite rising tensions, companies like Apple, Google, Tesla, Costco, and others continue investing in India due to its key role in supply chain diversification. Google is building a major data center in Andhra Pradesh; Apple had already shifted part of its iPhone production to India—but now raises concerns about the new duty regime impacting that shift (reuters.com).
    • India continues to engage in trade talks with the U.S., aiming for a fair and mutually beneficial agreement. Negotiations over agriculture and market access remain central sticking points. A bilateral trade pact is expected to progress in late 2025 (India Briefing).

    📊 Summary Table

Key Date Action Resulting Tariff on India
Apr 2, 2025 Initial “reciprocal tariff” announced (26%) ~26% (temporary hold)
    Aug 1, 2025 25% tariff officially enacted 25%
Aug 6, 2025 Executive order adds 25% penalty for Russian oil imports Total: 50% (effective ~Aug 27)

    ✅ In summary

Yes — as of August 6, 2025, the U.S. tariff on Indian imports will reach 50%, including a new penalty tied to India’s Russian oil trade. All measures take full effect 21 days after the order’s signing. Trade tensions are escalating, trade talks remain critical, and key export sectors in India along with U.S. consumers and international firms are bracing for impact.

Why did the English board stop using the controversial white balls?

The English cricket board (ECB) and other cricket authorities have occasionally changed or adjusted the use of white balls due to performance issues, visibility concerns, and quality consistency, rather than outright banning them. However, if you’re referring to why certain white balls became controversial and were phased out or replaced, here’s the deeper context:

⚪ The “Controversial White Balls” — What Was the Issue?

White balls are used in limited-overs cricket (One Day Internationals and T20s) because they are more visible under floodlights. However, some brands and types of white balls became controversial due to:

    1. Excessive Wear and Discoloration

    • Early white balls, especially the Dukes and Kookaburra white balls, often lost their color quickly, becoming hard to see for fielders and batsmen.
    • They would become dirty or brownish, reducing visibility and posing safety risks.
    • This is one of the reasons two white balls are now used in ODIs—to avoid the wear seen when one ball was used for 50 overs.

    2. Swing and Seam Inconsistency

    • Some white balls, especially early versions, swung too much or behaved unpredictably, causing imbalance between bat and ball.
    • For instance, Dukes white balls used in some English domestic competitions generated excessive lateral movement, favoring bowlers too heavily.

    3. Lack of Durability

    • Some balls would lose their shape or hardness, affecting both batting and bowling quality.
    • Kookaburra white balls were criticized in England for going soft quickly, limiting bowlers’ effectiveness in the death overs.

    🏏 ECB’s Response

Because of the above, the ECB and others:

    • Switched to or standardized specific ball brands (e.g., consistently using Kookaburra or Dukes depending on conditions).
    • Conducted trials with different balls in domestic competitions.
    • Implemented two-ball systems in ODIs (one from each end) to maintain quality and fairness.

    🔄 Current Practice

    • In ODIs, two white balls (one from each end) are used to reduce wear.
    • In T20s, a single white ball is used, but it’s only for 20 overs, so discoloration is less of a problem.
    • The choice of white ball still varies by country and competition — England sometimes prefers Dukes, while others use Kookaburra.

If you meant a specific incident or year where a white ball was suddenly dropped by the ECB, let me know — I can dig into that exact case.

🧠 Who are they called — and what does hibakusha mean?

The survivors of the 1945 Hiroshima and Nagasaki atomic bombings are known by the Japanese term “hibakusha” (被爆者), literally meaning “explosion-affected persons” (The Times, Wikipedia).
Officially recognized by Japan’s Atomic Bomb Survivors Relief Law, hibakusha include those who were within a few kilometers of the blast, exposed via fallout, or carried in utero at the time (Wikipedia).

How many are still alive today (August 6, 2025)?

    • As of March 31, 2025, the Japanese Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare reported 99,130 living hibakusha in Japan (Nippon).
    • This marked the first time the total fell below 100,000, with the average age now 86.13 years (Nippon).
    • Other sources cite slightly higher figures (e.g. ~106,000 in March 2024 or ~100,000 survivors) but the most current and official number is 99,130 as of March 2025 (Nippon).
    • Every year 6,000 to 10,000 hibakusha pass away, so their numbers are rapidly declining (Arms Control Association).

    Summary

    Topic Details
What they’re called Hibakusha (atomic bomb survivors)
Still alive ~99,130 as of March 31, 2025
    Average age ~86 years old
    Annual deaths ~6,000–10,000 hibakusha annually

    Why it matters

    • With only ~99,000 survivors left—all elderly—it is increasingly urgent to record their firsthand testimonies while possible.
    • Survivors have long been central to global anti-nuclear advocacy, primarily through Nihon Hidankyo, the Japan Confederation of A‑ and H‑Bomb Sufferers Organizations, which won the 2024 Nobel Peace Prize for its decades‑long peace activism and survivor testimony (El País, Wikipedia, Arms Control Association, Nippon).
    • Some extremely rare individuals are double hibakusha, exposed to both bombs—only two confirmed living survivors remain, such as Ayano Hirashima, who survived both Hiroshima and Nagasaki (The Times).

In short: about 99,130 hibakusha are still alive in Japan as of March 2025, most aged in their mid‑ to late 80s. Their continued testimonies are vital to preserving memory and advocating against future nuclea

Polio remains a formidable challenge in Pakistan—with the virus still active in 2025—despite significant declines in recent years. Here’s a detailed update on where things stand:

📉 Current Status: Progress and Setbacks

    • In 2024, Pakistan recorded 74 cases of wild poliovirus type 1 (WPV1). So far in 2025, 13 confirmed cases, including the latest from Gilgit‑Baltistan, bring the total to 13 by late July. That’s a modest drop from prior years, but far from elimination (Devdiscourse, Endpolio).
    • Pakistan accounted for 18 of the 20 global WPV1 cases reported through early August 2025—Afghanistan had only 2 cases—underscoring Pakistan’s continued status as one of the last two endemic countries (Wikipedia).
    • Environmental surveillance detected poliovirus in sewage samples from 20 districts, including major urban centers. This reflects ongoing virus presence even where symptomatic cases are few (Wikipedia).

🏥 What’s Behind the Persistent Transmission?

    • The resurgence began in mid‑2023, first in sewage surveillance and later in paralyzing cases. It’s focused in core reservoir areas: Karachi, southern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Quetta block, and now Gilgit‑Baltistan (who.int).
    • Factors include low coverage in difficult-to-access regions, vaccine refusals (over 60,000 refusals recorded during an April 2025 campaign), campaign gaps, and security threats to health workers from local militant groups (Wikipedia).
    • Internal program weaknesses—falsified records, untrained vaccination staff, and continued reliance on oral polio vaccine despite its known limitations—have also been flagged by WHO and independent reports (apnews.com).

🚀 Government Response & Immunization Campaigns

    • Pakistan launched its third nationwide polio campaign of 2025 in May, targeting over 45 million children under five with oral vaccine and Vitamin A supplementation (Endpolio).
    • The government reports a 99% target coverage in recent campaigns, with improved coordination and IT monitoring, supported by federal leadership and high-level engagement by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif (Endpolio, Dawn, nation.com.pk).

🎯 How Close Is Pakistan to Eradication?

    • Although Pakistan has seen over a 99% reduction in cases compared to peak years, the 2025 target for eradication is unlikely to be met. Experts now see 2029 as the earliest realistic certification year for eradication, aligning with WHO’s global timeline (Dawn, ABC, reuters.com, Wikipedia).
    • Continued access barriers, rising vaccine hesitancy in urban centers, and cross-border population movement with Afghanistan continue to pose high risks to progress (Wikipedia, Reddit).

✅ Bottom Line: Where Pakistan Stands

    Aspect Status
    Reported cases (2025) 13 confirmed WPV1 cases
Environmental detections Virus found in sewage across 20 districts
Transmission hotspots Karachi, KP, Quetta Block, Gilgit‑Baltistan
Campaign strength Multiple national rounds, high coverage
Major challenges Vaccine refusals, insecurity, program gaps
Eradication timeline Likely delay to 2029

Pakistan has made remarkable gains, but wild polio persists. Without closing immunity gaps in underserved communities and reforming surveillance and campaign quality, eradication remains elusive. The country is in a critical final phase—where every missed child matters.

Would you like to explore interventions tackling vaccine hesitancy, or how cross-border coordination with Afghanistan is being managed?

Egg freezing—also known as oocyte cryopreservation—is a widely used fertility preservation method, but its success depends on many factors, especially age and number of eggs retrieved.

👶 How Successful Is Egg Freezing?

    ✅ Key Success Metrics

    1. Egg survival after thawing
With modern vitrification techniques, around 90–95% of frozen eggs survive thawing (PubMed, theeggloo.com, Extend Fertility).
    2. Live birth rates per egg or oocyte extraction
According to ASRM/SART data, live birth rates per thawed egg are approximately:

      • 40–50% for women under 35
      • 35–45% for ages 35–37
      • 25–35% for ages 38–40
      • <10% above age 40 (theeggloo.com).
    3. Estimated chance of a live birth based on age and egg count
      • Freezing 10 eggs at age 35 offers ~70% chance of a live birth; freezing 20 eggs boosts this to ~90% (Wikipedia, Extend Fertility).
      • A study model found women under 35 freezing 10–20 eggs have 70–90% chance for at least one live birth later on (Extend Fertility).
    4. Real‑world cumulative outcomes
A Dutch study (≥2-year follow-up) found about 25.5% of women returned to use their eggs, with a 34.6% live birth rate per patient (Wikipedia, PubMed).

    👵 Age matters most

Egg quality and quantity decline over time. Younger women typically yield more viable eggs and therefore higher success odds. After age 35, both recovery and success rates drop significantly (UCSF). Decision‑tree modeling suggests egg freezing may increase live birth chances most at age 37, though the quality is best when done before age 34 (PMC).

🎯 Practical Example: A Real Scenario

Aged 35, retrieving 13 eggs might yield:

    • ~10 eggs survive thaw,
    • ~6 fertilize,
    • ~4 viable embryos,
    • Enough for one healthy child—with good probabilities for a second child (Allure, The Times).

    ⚠️ Important Considerations

    • Most don’t use their eggs: Only about 10–15% of women return to thaw their eggs, which can limit measurable outcomes (Reddit).
    • Emotional and financial toll: The procedure is taxing, expensive (often via personal or employer-funded insurance), and not risk-free emotionally. Regret remains low among users, but higher among those who considered but declined the procedure (Allure, Adelaide Now).
    • Clinic variability matters: Success hinges on lab technique (cycle protocols), embryologist skill, and clinic reporting transparency. Not all published success rates are representative or guaranteed (fertilitychoices.com).

    📋 Summary Table

    Factor Key Insight
Age at freezing Younger age = better egg quality → higher success (maximal <35)
Number of eggs collected 10 eggs: ~70% chance; 20 eggs: ~90% (under 35)
Technological advances Vitrification yields high egg survival (~90–95%)
Return/utilization rate Only ~10–25% of women retrieve their frozen eggs for use
Real-world live birth ~35% cumulative live birth rate among those who utilized eggs
Emotional/physical cost Variable outcomes with emotional and financial burdens

    ✅ Bottom Line

Egg freezing can give women more flexibility—but it’s not a guarantee. It offers best results when done early, with multiple eggs stored, and with full understanding of costs, realistic expectations, and likely outcomes. It is most effective when seen as an insurance option, not a certainty, particularly for career-planning, medical concerns, or delayed partnership.

Here’s a fact-based look at why iron-deficiency anemia is so widespread among pregnant women in Pakistan, grounded in national data and peer-reviewed research:

    📊 How Common Is It?

    • According to Pakistan’s National Nutrition Survey 2018, about 41.7% of women of reproductive age are anemic, with rural areas showing higher rates than urban ones (SAGE Journals).
    • Focused research from Muzaffarabad found an overall anemia prevalence of 74.6% among pregnant women, reaching 80.3% in the third trimester (pjp.pps.org.pk).
    • Another hospital-based study in Lahore reported 57.7% of pregnant women were anemic (34.4% mild; 23.3% moderate), with low income as a key predictor (PubMed).
    • At Jinnah Hospital in Karachi, 85.3% of pregnant patients (150 sampled) had anemia—mostly moderate, and strongly associated with low household income and minimal meat consumption (JSciMed Central).

❓ Why It Happens: Key Drivers

    1. Poor Pre-existing Nutritional Status

    • Many women enter pregnancy already iron-depleted. Pregnancy demands (increasing blood volume and fetal needs) quickly exacerbate this deficiency—WHO estimates that around 40% of women already have low to no iron stores before pregnancy (Wikipedia).
    • Dietary insufficiency is common: studies report low meat and iron-rich food intake in over 70% of anemic women in multiple regions (pjp.pps.org.pk).

    2. Socioeconomic Factors & Food Insecurity

    • Low income and food insecurity are consistently linked to anemia: poor households have less access to diverse, nutrient-rich diets (UNICEF, SAGE Journals).
    • Rural women are disproportionately affected: limited healthcare access, lower diet quality, early or frequent pregnancies, and higher infection rates all raise risk (ottechnologist.com).

    3. Parasitic Infections

    • Hookworm and other intestinal parasites, common in rural Pakistan, lead to chronic blood loss and iron depletion. Globally, ~56% of pregnant women in developing regions suffer anemia, often linked to helminth infections (Wikipedia).

    4. High Parity & Adolescent Pregnancy

    • More pregnancies and closely spaced births limit time for women to rebuild iron stores—especially affecting younger mothers whose own nutritional needs are still elevated (nation.com.pk).
    • Studies show maternal anemia correlates with age, and prevalence often rises in the third trimester and among mothers with multiple prior births (thejas.com.pk, longdom.org).

    5. Dietary Absorption Issues

    • Excessive tea consumption (rich in polyphenols) interferes with iron absorption, worsening anemia—even among women with moderate diets (longdom.org).

    6. Limited Awareness & Antenatal Care

    • Many women lack timely prenatal visits or iron supplementation. Counseling on diet, risks, and supplementation is insufficient or delayed (PMC, thejas.com.pk).

    🩺 Consequences of Maternal Anemia

    • Maternal risks: higher chance of pre-eclampsia, infections, hemorrhage, fatigue, and poor postpartum recovery (Wikipedia, PMC).
    • Fetal risks: low birth weight, premature labor, developmental delays, and increased neonatal anemia—often linked to maternal iron status (Wikipedia, PMC).

🌟 What Needs to Be Done

    Intervention Why It Matters
Nutrition education & food supplementation Helps pregnant women adopt iron-rich diets and understand absorption
Iron/folic acid supplementation early in pregnancy Reduces anemia during critical fetal growth periods
Deworming where appropriate (after first trimester) Addresses hookworm contributions to chronic blood loss (Wikipedia)
Expand antenatal screening & follow-up Early detection and treatment help reduce severity
Target poverty and rural regions Address root socioeconomic and service access barriers
Delay repeat pregnancies and support adolescent mothers Allows recovery between pregnancies and reduces overall risk

    ✅ Bottom Line

Iron-deficiency anemia among pregnant women is far too common in Pakistan due to a convergence of low pre-pregnancy iron stores, poor diets, high parity, parasite infections, and limited health care access. Tackling it requires both individual-level care and broader structural support—including nutrition education, prenatal services, and poverty reduction.
